From Index Cards to Digital Corpora: Evolving Access to the Biblia Patristica

Abstract The Biblia Patristica is a monumental critical index of biblical quotations and allusions in early Christian literature. For decades, scholars relied on the printed volumes published by the Centre d’Analyse et de Documentation Patristiques (CADP). While the advent of PDF technology initially improved accessibility by allowing these heavy tomes to be digitized, early digital versions were often cumbersome, unsearchable, and visually degraded. This paper explores the transition from static PDF "scans" to dynamic, "better" digital ecosystems. It analyzes the limitations of the traditional PDF format for patristic research and highlights superior modern alternatives, such as the online Biblia Patristica database and text-encoding initiatives that allow for semantic searching and intertextual analysis.
