Tactic 1: The Rubric Hunt
Most Course Syllabus UTM documents include a rubric for assignments. For example, if the rubric says "Literature Review (30%) – Uses at least 10 peer-reviewed journals," you know exactly what to do. What is a Course Syllabus?
By now, you understand that this document is not just a formality. It is your strategic weapon. It tells you exactly what the lecturer wants, exactly when they want it, and exactly how they will grade it.
- Robert Gillespie Academic Skills Centre (RGASC) – Located in the Library (Room 1073). The syllabus may explicitly suggest using RGASC for “essay writing support” or “math anxiety.” Book an appointment early.
- UTM Library Course Reserves – The syllabus will list required readings. Many are on physical reserve (2-hour loan) or digital reserve via Quercus.
- UTM Career Centre – Some upper-year syllabi (e.g., MGT courses, CCT courses) integrate career assignments. The syllabus will note a “Career Centre module” as a required deliverable.
- Office of the Registrar – For syllabus-related petitions (e.g., late withdrawal, missed final exam due to illness). Keep a copy of every syllabus from every course; you will need them for petition documentation.
- UTM’s Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Office – If a syllabus fails to include accessibility or religious accommodation wording, this office can help you request an amended syllabus.
