Engineers often need to distinguish between these two because their tooling is not interchangeable.
The 1973 edition (Beuth Verlag, green cover) contained a significant typographical error in the tooth thickness tables.
The 1977 corrigendum (often called DIN 5482 T1/T2 1977-07) fixed the tables and added the now-famous "Limit dimensions for side fit."
The 1986 edition attempted to harmonize with ISO, but many German Altgesellen (old masters) refused to use it.
