Years later, Hayati and Aziz travel by sea on the famous Dutch passenger ship Van Der Wijck to Surabaya. Zainuddin, now married to a kind woman named Khadijah, learns they are on the same ship that is scheduled to pass near his hometown. On a stormy night, the ship hits a reef and sinks in one of Indonesia’s worst maritime tragedies. In the chaos, Zainuddin rushes to save Hayati. He succeeds, but dies in the effort, finally proving his love and noble character through sacrifice.
