Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 4: Wii Dolphin

Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 4 on Wii via Dolphin: The Ultimate Guide to Playing the Fan-Made Masterpiece

For nearly two decades, the Budokai Tenkaichi (known as Sparking! in Japan) series has been the gold standard for Dragon Ball Z arena fighters. The pinnacle, Budokai Tenkaichi 3, released on the PlayStation 2 and Wii in 2007, is still hailed by many as the best DBZ game ever made. But what if there was more? What if a dedicated team of modders took that perfect foundation and added over 60 new characters, hundreds of costumes, and stages from Dragon Ball Super?

  • Higher Internal Resolution: On native hardware, the Wii runs at 480p. On Dolphin, you can render BT4 at 4K (3840x2160) or even 8K. The cel-shaded characters look like a modern fighting game.
  • Widescreen Hacks: Dolphin offers native widescreen and even ultrawide support, eliminating the black bars of the PS2/ Wii era.
  • Performance & Stability: The PS2 emulator (PCSX2) struggles with BT3’s particle effects during giant character battles. Dolphin runs BT4 flawlessly at a locked 60 FPS even on mid-range gaming PCs.
  • Control Flexibility: The Wii version was designed for the Classic Controller and GameCube controller. Dolphin lets you map these perfectly to an Xbox or PlayStation pad, or even use a keyboard for precise analog movement.

Optimizing the "Wii Remote" Problem

The original Tenkaichi 3 on Wii supported both classic controls and motion swinging. Tenkaichi 4 removes motion controls entirely. Here is how to set up a standard controller: Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 4 Wii Dolphin

  • Roster Balance: The new characters are shockingly balanced, not overpowered. Jiren has devastating counters, while Kefla is a rushdown monster. Ultra Instinct Goku has an auto-dodge mechanic that drains Ki rapidly.
  • New Moves: Many old characters received new Super Attacks. For example, SSJ2 Gohan now has a "Father-Son Kamehameha" as an ultimate.
  • Aesthetics: The auras are completely reworked. When you charge Ki, the aura is denser and more anime-accurate. The UI Goku has the silver/black aura that shimmers perfectly in 4K.
  • Bugs to Expect: Minor sound glitches in character select screens. Some transformation voice lines are spliced from other games (Xenoverse 2 or FighterZ). The team has done incredible work, but it’s still a fan mod.
