The units in Rome: Total War: Barbarian Invasion (BI) represent a significant shift from the classic legionaries of the base game, reflecting the late antiquity period. Armies are generally more mobile, featuring powerful heavy cavalry, religiously inspired troops, and unique "horde" units that emerge when a faction loses all its settlements. Roman Faction Units

Strategy Note

  • As Romans: Use Plumbatarii + Comitatenses to hold, then Palatina to flank. Never fight Huns in open field without massive cavalry.
  • As Huns: Never dismount. Micro horse archers to kill generals, then mop up.
  • As Horde: Keep your Women of the Tribe alive – they're your future population.
  • Horde armies consist of huge numbers of "Warband" units. They have zero upkeep but very low morale.
  • As a Horde, you must sack a city immediately to survive.
  • As a Roman, do not fight Hordes in the open field early on; they outnumber you 3-to-1. Let them siege a city and use your superior heavy infantry to slaughter them at the gates.
