1. You power on the radio (usually to a specific display state).
2. You click "Read" in SFE.
3. The software sends a voltage spike via the cable’s TX line to signal the radio to enter programming mode.
4. The radio halts its normal operation and dumps the contents of its EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory) via the RX line.
5. The SFE software receives this raw hex data and parses it into human-readable fields: Channel names, RX frequencies, TX frequencies, CTCSS tones (privacy codes), and DMR slots.

: The physical radio is connected to a personal computer or laptop using a dedicated OEM programming cable. This cable usually plugs into the radio's speaker/mic accessory port (or a dedicated data port) on one end and a USB port on the computer on the other. Reading Data ("Read" Operation)

Once your settings are finalized, click "Write to Radio." A progress bar will appear. During this time, do not unplug the cable or turn off the radio. Once finished, the radio will usually reboot, and your new settings will be live. Troubleshooting Common Connection Issues

The Evolution: From SFE to CPS and Open Source

It is important to note that "SFE" is an older generational term. Modern vendors use CPS (Customer Programming Software). However, the underlying principles are identical.
