Thaniyavarthanam (literally “A Change of State”) is a 1987 Malayalam-language film written and directed by Sibi Malayil, with a screenplay by A. K. Lohithadas. Regarded as a landmark in Indian cinema for its sensitive treatment of mental health and social ostracism, the film combines powerful performances, a restrained directorial style, and a poignant script to depict how superstition and rumor can destroy an ordinary man’s life.
